Stanley L. Smith

Letter to Stanley Smith From Louis Smith

3 September, 1944 Dear Stanley: I am at a total loss to understand why you haven’t written me. I feel sure that you no doubt have been busy but since I wrote you two or three letters asking questions I think you should find a little time to sit down and write. How about it? Okay that’s settled. I am still located here at Camp Wolters and am getting to wonder if I will be here for the duration. I certainly hope not. I told you in my last letter that I had been up home and had a nice visit with the folks and went out to the lake (Blackwell) three of four times but did not catch any fish. It was terribly hot up there and since I was just loafing around that made it seem much worse. I saw Dale and he was telling me about your ability as a salesman and I am quite proud of you. I did not get to see Suzanne or Margarite , as a matter of fact there were a lot of people I wanted to see for some reason or other I didn’t get around to it. I was without a car most of the time and that makes it bad. We have been working very hard down here putting in about fourteen to sixteen hours a day and with the speed marches we are taking it is beginning to tell on my feet so if they don’t ship me across soon my feet will be in such a condition that will not permit me to make even a five mile hike. We have been having much cooler weather here for the past ten days as it is rained for the past ten days as it is rained for three days and I doubt very much if we have any more of the real hot days. We started our new training cycle on the 24th of July and now after six weeks I believe we will have the best group of men of any yet. Most of them are younger and that is what makes a good soldier. We had very good luck on their range qualifying over 90% and that with three days of driving rain. Well little man I must stop and write grandmother a letter or she will disown me so in closing let me again suggest that you sit right down and write me a letter. Love to you, Louis
